GOSFORTH

Looking for Advice in Gosforth from a Mortgage Broker?

Gosforth is an affluent suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne, situated immediately to the north of the city centre, with a population of just under 25,000. What’s not to love about Gosforth, recently voted as one of the best places to live in Northern England by the Times. Continue reading to learn more about the area and our mortgage advice.
Gosforth, together with Jesmond, are Newcastle’s most popular residential areas. It’s popular with young professionals getting on the property ladder and homeowners moving up the ladder and looking for family homes.
The Newcastle suburb extends north from the central part, either side of the Great North Road, all the way up to Brunton Park for approximately two miles.

The most popular parts are central Gosforth and South Gosforth. Heading along the Great North Road, past Regent centre and Gosforth Metro station, are numerous residential developments including estates such as Whitebridge Park, Greystoke Park, Melton Park, and Brunton Park. Further to the north west is Newcastle Great Park, the most recent development, which extends either side of the A1 dual carriageway and includes over 4,000 new houses and apartments.

Where to Buy a Property in Gosforth

Central Gosforth and South Gosforth are dominated by Victorian and Edwardian dwellings, whereas the park estates along the Great North Road are typically post-war to recent dwellings comprising detached, semi-detached and bungalows.

Most of the new builds are within the Great Park. Scattered throughout the suburb are also numerous recent developments comprising purpose built apartment blocks.
There are also occasionally converted farmhouses, stables, and barns from an era when parts of Gosforth were semi-rural.

So whatever type of home you are looking for, Gosforth may provide the solution.

Current House Prices in Gosforth

The average price of properties sold in Gosforth in 2018 was slightly higher than the average for Newcastle and approximately 15% less than those in the nearby suburb of Jesmond. Last year terraced houses averaged £258,000, semi-detached properties sold for an average price of £258,000, while detached homes fetched £370,000.

The figures do not reflect the entire range of current property prices in 2019 within the suburb, starting as low as £50,000 for one-bedroom apartments to over £2.7 million for a luxury detached house.

Apartments prices start at £50,000 for a basic one-bedroom flat and rise to over £750,000 for a three-bedroom luxury penthouse apartment. Expect to pay between £150,000 and £200,000 for a decent two-bedroom apartment.

Semi-detached properties range from £150,000 to over £1,500,000, terraced properties go from £120,000 to over £675,000, and detached from £220,000 to over £2,750,000.

So what does Gosforth have to offer

Eat, drink and be merry

If you are looking to socialise with friends and family, there is a good choice of restaurants, pubs, coffee shops, restaurants, and gastropubs to cater for all. Most of which are on the high street in central Gosforth.

Typical British pubs and bars along the high street include the John Bulman (Wetherspoons), The County, The Brandling Arms, and the Gosforth Hotel.

My preferred options are the new gastropubs that have entered the mix, Bar Luga located within a former church and Barca Art Bar that serve food along with quality cocktails, gins, real ales, and IPAs. Others worthy of a mention are the Three Mile Inn, the Falcon's Nest in Great Gosforth Park and the Brandling Villa in South Gosforth.
Gosforth Restaurants

If you are looking for a bite to eat, the high street and south Gosforth has a good selection of restaurants and cafes to choose from; including Italian, Indian, Chinese, and even Lebanese.  My personal favourite is Adrianos, serving classic Italian and Sardinian cuisine in relaxed surroundings that include an orangery.

For those looking for a more family-orientated restaurant or food on the go, fear not; Pizza Express is open on the high street, together with fast food outlets such as Greggs and Gosforth Chippy for a traditional fish and chip takeaway.

Gosforth has an abundance of coffee shops located on the high street including Costa coffee, Deli Expresso, Cafe Corsaro, Rosie’s, Cafe Beam, Cafe 95, and Chaia, a tearoom. In South Gosforth, Truffles Cafe and Thyme Square, are located on Station Road down the hill from the Metro station.

Shopping and local amenities

Gosforth has a vibrant high street which includes stores such as M&S food, Asda, Sainsbury's, independent food and clothing outlets, a well-established DIY store, estate agents, banks and building societies, an indoor shopping arcade, and car park.
For anything else, you can always visit Eldon Square in the city or Gateshead Metrocentre.
Gosforth Central Park is a tranquil public park off the High Street, behind the shopping centre, where you can unwind and get away from the hustle and bustle. A place where activities include bowling and cricket.

Nearby is Newcastle Town Moor, situated on the outskirts of Gosforth and Jesmond, 400 acres of grassland. A great place to go walking and running.
Gosforth Pool and Leisure Centre on Regent Park Road is a popular family-friendly centre with two pools, fitness gym, and sauna.
David Lloyd gym, located on the edge of Jesmond Dene Park, is a premium family-orientated gym and fitness centre with indoor tennis courts, indoor pool, and sauna. Well worth a visit.
For those on a lesser budget, The Gym recently opened a fitness facility on the high street.
For book buffs, the local library resides on Regent Park Road near the swimming pool. You can also pop into the more extensive modern central library in the city centre.

Local sports facilities and clubs

Gosforth is blessed to have an active community and has many clubs that cater to golf, cricket, lawn tennis, football, rugby, swimming, bowling, and squash.

Gosforth Rugby Club, The Northern Football Club and golf courses are situated north of Broadway West, on either side of the B1318 Great North Road.

Are the transport links good?

Newcastle city centre can be easily accessed in under 10 minutes using the Metro, with local stations including Gosforth and South Gosforth. By car, it takes around 10 minutes but may take longer during the rush hour.

The roads on either side of Gosforth are often heavily congested at peak times, including the A167, A1, Grandstand Road, and Jesmond Dene Road.

Newcastle Central Station provides rail links to destinations throughout the UK, and Newcastle Airport is accessible within 20 minutes, either by Metro or car.

Schools

Gosforth is fortunate to have a good selection of 14 primary and secondary schools on its doorstep, rated as good to outstanding.
