The more desirable Victorian and Edwardian properties are often to the north and towards Monkseaton, such as Marine Avenue, or along with the seafront parades, such as The Links. To the south properties tend to be more densely packed and with a greater variety. However, there are still some stunning Victorian townhouses and terraces, in areas like Gordon Square and Windsor Crescent.

So What does Whitley Bay have to Offer?

St Mary's Lighthouse

Mortgages for homes near St Marys Lighthouse in Whitley Bay

The iconic lighthouse, built in 1898, resides on a tiny tidal, just north of the town, and can only be accessed once the causeway appears between the tides. While it may no longer be operational, nowadays it is a visitor centre, together with the surrounding nature reserve comprising a clifftop grassland, rockpools, beach, and wildlife wetland habitat.

Why not experience it and climb the 137 steps to the top of the lighthouse and enjoy some spectacular views of the local coastline. For those who are unable to, there is a video facility that encapsulates the experience for you.

The Beaches

Whitley Bay Beach is a golden sand blue flag award-winning beach, stretching from Whitley Bay North towards the Lighthouse, and is a popular place for recreation, enjoying the sun, and relaxing walks.

Nearby beaches include the majestic Tynemouth Longsands and the beach cove of Cullercoats, both favourites with the locals and tourists.

Spanish City Whitley Bay

Spanish City

This historical landmark was originally opened in 1910 and only recently reopened in 2018 following an extensive restoration project with the introduction of new family-friendly leisure facilities including; a steakhouse and seafood restaurant, tearooms, champagne bar, and events rooms all housed under the iconic glass domed roof.

A quaint independent cinema run by volunteers in the heart of Whitley Bay, screening the best of British, Hollywood and Bollywood new releases. An amazing experience for a cinema that only has 50 seats.

Seaton Deleval Hall

Seaton Deleval Hall

Seaton Delaval Hall built in the 18th century by the same architect who designed Blenheim Palace and was a master of English Baroque architecture.

While the Grade I listed building has survived several great fires and is currently undergoing National Lottery funding to restore it to its former glory, the building remains awe-inspiring, from the central hall, through to the stables and eerie basement where the servants used to reside.

Once outside in the grounds, stretch your legs and explore the extensive woodland walks and paths traversing through the woods, stunning gardens, lawns, and architectural structures, such as the obelisk.

Where to Enjoy a Meal

Restaurants and cafes offering good food and good value are easy to find.

For those looking for something more traditional, you should visit Trenchers Restaurant in Spanish City for some good old fish ‘n’ chips. Hailing from Whitby, Trenchers have a tradition of making fried seafood dishes. I’ve visited both and love them. They serve a variety of seafood offering, including cod, haddock, oysters, crabs, and prawns.

Other options to consider in Spanish City include; the steakhouse, the tearoom for afternoon tea with cakes, scones and sandwiches, waffles and pancakes, or maybe even a tipple in the champagne bar.
And for those who want to pay a little less and have the option of sitting outside, maybe consider visiting Pantrini’s around the corner.

The Crab and Waltzer is a quirky family-friendly American-themed restaurant with a lot of personality that has a kid’s play area and amazing views across the Links to Spanish City.

Hinnies Restaurant is a renowned local restaurant located on the seafront that serves up Geordie-influenced classics. Well presented food served up by really friendly staff in relaxed surroundings with eye-catching rustic decor. Well worth a visit for no-nonsense tasty treats at a great price from up north.

Sculpture Spanish City

If you like kebabs or spicy food, why not visit Elder and Wolfe, an award-winning restaurant with a relaxed atmosphere that serves up wood-fired kebabs, pizzas, and tacos, as well as amazing cocktails, and real ale. Just be aware, they are only open between Wednesday and Saturday.

Another tasty alternative is Loca Latin. A Latin American themed restaurant which serves up tasty Latin American food, creative cocktails, and live entertainment. I’ve visited their other venue in South Shields and was not disappointed. Great choice of drinks and food on the menu. If you don’t like loud, lively music, you may want to avoid this one ;-)

For those looking for something different, like curry, Shampan is a well recommended Indian restaurant with modest pricing.

Cafe 19 is an amazing dog-friendly cafe that serves up some scrumptious breakfasts and lunches. Situated on the Promenade, with a great view of the beach and St Mary’s Lighthouse, also caters for vegetarians, vegans and those with a gluten-intolerance.

Looking for somewhere to relax for a drink or two?

The Fat Ox if you are looking for a more traditional pub that has live football on the screens.

The Left Luggage room is a popular micro pub in Monkseaton Metro train station that serves real ales, IPA, gin or whiskey.

While Whitley Bay does have a nightclub, Havana, I would recommend popping into Newcastle if you are heading out for a late night and hitting the dancefloor.
